Higher education and teacher education: governance and policy, the social dimension, curricular pertinence and educational innovation

Alejandra Montané López (Coordinator.)

This publication is TO-INN’s first. The challenge facing the research network in which this project is framed is the systematic consideration of the diverse dimensions that influence institutions who train education professionals: governance and policy, the social dimension, curricular pertinence and educational innovation. These dimensions affect the quality of education and, therefore, could help to bring innovation into each member country’s educational system with regard to how learning opportunities are made available to different sections of society. That is to say, these dimensions are constantly impacting on learners’ competences, goals, expectations and educational opportunities, from childhood to higher education.

The article describes and analyzes this in the four blocks which constitute, for each participating institution, the springboard for our project development: governance and politics, the social dimension, curricular pertinence and educational innovation.

The Observatory on Students and Studies of the Universitat de Barcelona: a new form of participation.

María Ángeles Alegre-Sánchez, Isaac Calduch*, Albert Gili Moreno y Gemma Fonrodona-Baldajos

In 2012, the UB created the Observatory on Students and Studies so that students could actively participate in university affairs and strengthen their sense of commitment to learning and their responsibility for it. The Observatory collates information about university policies that affect students and provides students with a window on universitary life from which to more clearly see their own values and priorities; a place where students can voice their concens and find mechanisms to obtain solutions.
